We analyze a set of 89 Type Ia supernovae (SN Ia) that have both optical and near-infrared (NIR) photometry to derive distances and construct low redshift (z ≤ 0.04) Hubble diagrams. We construct mean light curve (LC) templates using a hierarchical Bayesian model. We explore both Gaussian process (GP) and template methods for fitting the LCs and estimating distances, while including peculiar velocity and photometric uncertainties. For the 56 SN Ia with both optical and NIR observations near maximum light, the GP method yields a NIR-only Hubble-diagram with a RMS of 0.117 ± 0.014 mag when referenced to the NIR maxima. For each NIR band, a comparable GP method RMS is obtained when referencing to NIR-max or B-max. Using NIR LC templates referenced to B-max yields a larger RMS value of 0.138 ± 0.014 mag. Fitting the corresponding optical data using standard LC fitters that use LC shape and color corrections yields larger RMS values of 0.179 ± 0.018 mag with SALT2 and 0.174 ± 0.021 mag with SNooPy. Applying our GP method to subsets of SN Ia NIR LCs at NIR maximum light, even without corrections for LC shape, color, or host-galaxy dust reddening, provides smaller RMS in the inferred distances, at the ∼ 2.3-4.1σ level, than standard optical methods that do correct for those effects. Our ongoing RAISIN program on the Hubble Space Telescope will exploit this promising infrared approach to limit systematic errors when measuring the expansion history of the universe to constrain dark energy.

We present a sequence of eight spectropolarimetric observations monitoring the geometric evolution of the late phase of the major 2012 outburst of SN 2009ip. These were acquired with the Focal Reducer and Low Dispersion Spectrograph polarimeter mounted on European Southern Observatory VLT. The continuum was polarized at 0.3-0.8 per cent throughout the observations, showing that the photosphere deviated substantially from spherical symmetry by 10-15 per cent. Significant line polarization is detected for both hydrogen and helium at high velocities. The similarity in the polarized signal between these elements indicates that they form in the same location in the ejecta. The line polarization (p ∼ 1-1.5 per cent) at low velocities revealed the presence of a highly aspherical hydrogen-and helium-rich circumstellar medium (CSM). Monte Carlo simulations of the observed polarimetry were performed in an effort to constrain the shape of the CSM. The simulations imply that the polarimetry can be understood within the framework of a disc-like CSM inclined by 14• ± 2 • out of the line of sight, obscuring the photosphere only at certain epochs. The varying temporal evolution of polarization at high and low velocities indicated that the fast-moving ejecta expanded with a preferred direction orthogonal to that of the CSM.

Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) play key roles in revealing the accelerating expansion of the universe, but our knowledge about their progenitors is still very limited. Here we report the discovery of a rigid dichotomy in circumstellar (CS) environments around two subclasses of type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) as defined by their distinct photospheric velocities. For the SNe Ia with high photospheric velocities (HV), we found a significant excess flux in blue light during 60-100 days past maximum, while this phenomenon is absent for SNe with normal photospheric velocity (Normal). This blue excess can be attributed to light echoes by circumstellar dust located at a distance of about 1-3×10 17 cm from the HV subclass. Moreover, we also found that the HV SNe Ia show systematically evolving Na I absorption line by performing a systematic search of variable Na I absorption lines in spectra of all SNe Ia, whereas this evolution is rarely seen in Normal ones. The evolving Na I absorption can be modeled in terms of photoionization model, with the location of the gas clouds at a distance of about 2×10 17 cm, in striking agreement with the location of CS dust inferred from B-band light curve excess. These observations show clearly that the progenitors of HV and Normal subclasses are systematically different, suggesting that they are likely from single and double degenerate progenitor systems, respectively.
