Superparamagnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles with Variable Size and an Iron Oxidation State as Prospective Imaging Agents

Abstract: Magnetite nanoparticles in the size range of 3.2-7.5 nm were synthesized in high yields under variable reaction conditions using high-temperature hydrolysis of the precursor iron(II) and iron(III) alkoxides in diethylene glycol solution. The average sizes of the particles were adjusted by changing the reaction temperature and time and by using a sequential growth technique. To obtain γ-iron(III) oxide particles in the same range of sizes, magnetite particles were oxidized with dry oxygen in diethylene glycol a… Show more

“…In addition to aforementioned HAP and SPIONs crystallinities and crystallite sizes in different crystallographic directions, these patterns indicated the mixed magnetite/maghemite composition of SPIONs (Table 3). Although the specific magnetization of maghemite is lower than that of magnetite, 38 this phase is being more favored for MH over magnetite because the extent of DNA damage is dependent on the Fe oxidation state 39 and lesser for Fe 2+ than for Fe 3+ .…”

“…20% smaller than that of Fe 3 O 4 of a similar size, their r 1 relaxivities are similar. 95 The enhanced contrast effect of γ- 101 Because of the increased interaction between the Gd 3+ ions and water molecules, the collection of Gd 3+ near the surface of nanoparticles may further enhance the T 1 contrast effect. 102 Therefore, the r 1 value of GdIO is larger than that of pure iron oxide nanoparticles with similar size.…”

“…Their toxicity may not be related to its size as shown by many studies. Thus, size of IONP may not be of much significance except for its magnetic characteristics that are usually found to be safe (150).…”
