Supplementation of salvianic acid A to boar semen extender to improve seminal quality and antioxidant capacity

Abstract: The purpose of this test was to investigate the effect of salvianic acid A (SAA, CAS No. 76822‐21‐4) on the quality of boar semen during liquid storage at 17°C. The effects of different concentrations of SAA on semen quality and antioxidant capacity were analyzed. Boar semen was diluted with Beltsville Thawing Solution (BTS) containing different concentrations (0, 15, 30, 45, 60, 75 μM of SAA). During the storage period, sperm activity was measured every 24 hr, and plasma membrane integrity, acrosome integrity… Show more

“…In addition, lipid peroxidation can also damage sperm. Experiments have proved that adding antioxidants to the semen extender of goats [ 37 ], cattle [ 38 ], pigs [ 39 ] and horses [ 40 ] can effectively improve sperm motility and eventually improve the effect of artificial insemination [ 41 ], which is of great significance for the development of animal husbandry.…”

“…Therefore, research on the effective composition of sperm preservation solution is very important for semen preservation. For example, adding some reagents or drugs, such as oligomeric proanthocyanidin [ 3 ], kojic acid [ 4 ], salvianolic acid A [ 5 ], to the sperm diluent will significantly affect sperm motility and in vitro preservation time.…”

“…Hence, it is very important to study the pig sperm preserved at 17℃ in research and production. [14,29]. However, during the sperm preservation, sperm suffers from severe oxidative stress due to the accumulation of ROS which could decrease the sperm quality, compromise to the plasma membrane, the acrosome, the DNA integrity and the protein [12,24,28].…”
