Surface and groundwater pollution by organochlorine compounds in a typical soybean system from the south Pampa, Argentina

Abstract: Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) use has been restricted or forbidden in Argentina since 1998 and technical endosulfan is the last currently used OCPs on the soybean-wheat production. As they persist in soil for several years after application, OCPs constitute a source of environmental pollution. This work aims to assess OCPs contamination of groundwater (Gw) and streamwater (Sw) in the Quequén Grande River watershed from south Argentinean Pampas in relation to the hydrogeological characteristics. OCPs were an… Show more

“…These highest results could possibly be explained by the illegal use of remaining stocks, because water sampling in the present study (2014–2015) was carried out after endosulfan was banned in Argentina (by July 2013; Servicio Nacional de Sanidad y Calidad Agroalimentaria ). Except for site L2 (period 2), endosulfan levels (0.15–7.9 ng/L; Figure ) were comparable to those reported for the same watershed in 2007 (1.5–7.5 ng/L; Gonzalez et al ).…”

“…Occurrence of endosulfan in this watershed has also been reported in soils (Gonzalez et al ; Lupi et al ), sediments, stream water, groundwater (Gonzalez et al , ), macrophytes (Gonzalez et al ), air (Silva‐Barni et al ), and fish (Silva‐Barni et al ). These data indicate a wide distribution of endosulfan in different compartments as a consequence of its use in the region.…”

“…This has lead to a greater threat of aquifer pollution. Many studies (Costa et al, 2002;Aparicio et al, 2008;Gonzalez et al, 2012Gonzalez et al, , 2013 show evidence of high concentrations of contaminants in groundwater in the southeast of the Buenos Aires Province in Argentina, probably due to rain and irrigation leaching.…”
