Surface grafting thermoresponsive PEO-PPO-PEO chains

Abstract: The objective of this study was to engineer surfaces comprising covalently bound polyethylene oxide-polypropylene oxide-polyethylene oxide (PEO-PPO-PEO) chains, able to coil and uncoil in aqueous media, as a function of temperature. Thermoresponsive surfaces can be used in diverse areas, such as tissue engineering and 'on-command' drug delivery. The grafting scheme was exemplified using a poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) film and started with the exposure of the substrate to plasma of ammonia, whereby amine … Show more

“…Zacharias mentions that the Sassanids were active in Persarmenia further north, and that Kavadh attempted to capture Martyropolis, a city near the border and recently strengthened by emperor Justinian 24 . A similar statement was made by Malalas and it was reported that Kavadh sent an army to take over the city 25 . Martyropolis was under siege by the Sassanids; The attacks made by the city garrison under siege were repelled 26 .…”

“…In 531 The Romans who confronted the Sassanids were defeated in Callinicum 19 . After the Battle of Callinicum, the situation was reported to the emperor Justinian by the magister militum Hermogenes; and then the emperor appointed a commander named Constantinolus to determine the cause of the Romans' failure 20 .…”

“…On the other hand, the observed shielding effect on adhesion forces mediated by the hydrophilic PEG block in the outer region of the copolymer film can be potentially employed for various applications, e.g. fabrication of antifouling surfaces against specific biomolecules [70,71], or more generally the idea can be used to prepare surfaces with selective molecular recognition capabilities and interfacial…”

“…In most cases, this temperature sensitivity reflects conformational changes of thermosensitive polymer chains attached to the surface. Surfaces bearing poly( N -substituted-acrylamide) chains have been widely investigated, focusing primarily on poly( N -isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM). , Temperature-responsive surfaces based on oligo(ethylene glycol)methacrylates and ethylene oxide- co -propylene oxide copolymers have been explored as well, with particular focus on their nonfouling characteristics that are useful in biomedical applications. Poly(2-alkyl-2-oxazolines), where the alkyl group is methyl, ethyl, or isopropyl, also possess nonfouling properties, yet there are only a few studies on their properties on surfaces.…”
