Surface hardening by means of plasma immersion ion implantation and nitriding in glow discharge with electrostatic confinement of electrons

Abstract: -At argon or nitrogen pressure 0.005-5 Pa a metal substrate is immersed in plasma of glow discharge filling a vacuum chamber and negatively biased to U = 1−10 kV. Emitted by substrate secondary electrons bombard the chamber walls and it results in growth of electron emission chamber walls and rise of gas ionization intensity inside chamber. At pressure p < 0.05 Pa nonuniformity of plasma density does not exceed ∼10%. Measurement results of sheath width d between homogeneous plasma and a lengthy flat substrate … Show more

“…One of the ways to increase durability is the product working surface modification. There are various modification methods, including plasma techniques: thermohardening [ 10 , 11 , 12 ], ion-plasma diffusion implantation [ 13 , 14 ], ion-beam hardening treatment [ 15 , 16 , 17 ], which contribute to its hardness increase in varying degrees (by 15–50%).…”

“…The hydroabrasive wear results from the mechanical wear of the submersible pump part material because of the cutting or scratching action of solids in the process fluid stream. Vibro-abrasive wear is caused by vibrations and unbalanced forces that affect the condition of the friction surfaces between which high hardness mechanical impurities (abrasive) may be present [19]. The presence of abrasive in combination with the significant contact force of the friction surfaces leads to catastrophic wear of the pump parts.…”

“…The effect of increasing the resistance after duplex treatment is especially manifested as the cutting speed increases. Advanced results were obtained when operating experimental samples of nitrided high-speed tools with a coating (Nb-Ti-Al-V) N [35][36][37][38][39].…”
