Sustainability assessment of a decentralized green diesel production in small‐scale biorefineries

Abstract: In this study, three scales of a biofuel-driven biorefinery were evaluated in technoeconomic, environmental and geospatial terms for green diesel production from macauba oil. The results show that the relative capital expenditure on the small scale is four times higher than that on the large scale, being significantly affected by the hydrogen facilities. However, coproducts, tax deductions for family farming and carbon credits can sustain the small-scale production of green diesel. The carbon footprint of the … Show more

“…This is possible when small farmers are involved in the production and processing of raw materials from the forest. These industrial units help generate jobs at the local level and maintain the Atlantic Forest since the bioactive compounds and value-added products to be obtained are mainly extracted from leaves, roots, bark, and seeds (Machado et al, 2021;Salvador et al, 2022;Stegmann et al, 2020).…”

“…Because it is characterized as a proposal under development, small and medium-sized biore neries can be much more interesting in social, economic, and environmental terms when managed by family farmers, since they have a greater impact on local development compared to larger scale projects, which have higher costs, especially in the initial phases (Salvador et al, 2022). Another issue is that the technologies available for the operation of these small and medium-sized units may be cheaper and therefore more accessible to family farmers, who in turn can produce and process raw materials at the same time, which in turn generates jobs in the community itself (Ait Sair et al, 2021).…”
