PurposeThe discourse of construction practitioners and decision-makers worldwide has begun to appreciate and acknowledge the advantages of sustainable building. Toward this goal, one of the main steps is creating a control mechanism, which provides the context for moving to sustainable buildings by monitoring the environmental, economic and social dimensions of sustainability. The previous research studies indicate the social dimension has received far less attention than the economic and environmental aspects. Therefore, this study aims at developing a social sustainability framework to evaluate building systems.Design/methodology/approachThis research has chosen the Parsons sociological theory as its theoretical framework basis and acquires the research theoretical framework with its modification and completion by grounded theory (GT). In the next step, to realize the GT structure validity and model fitting, the confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was used and the research hypotheses were tested.FindingsAn integrated social sustainable framework is presented with five subsystems: socio-political, socio-cultural, socio-institutional, socio-economic and socio-environmental. This research addresses the void of a comprehensive social sustainability framework in the construction industry, and the findings can contribute to construction industry practitioners and decision-makers to evaluate building systems socially.Originality/valueThe application of this framework is not limited to the construction industry and building systems. It can deliver a general use for integrating social perspectives into decision-making on various subjects. Localization and specialization of current research's social sustainability components and factors can be a high potential research topic for future studies, in all fields and scopes. This framework can be a significant contribution to the sustainable development goals (SDGs) as a basis for creating comparable models to assess social aspects of buildings, campuses and urban sustainability.

The renovation of buildings involves multidisciplinary issues and multistakeholder involvement, which makes the process complex to manage. The purpose of this paper is to present a transparent, openly accessible, adaptable framework to ensure a sustainable renovation process, covering the technical, environmental, economic, social, and cultural historical aspects to be considered by the various actors during the renovation process. A framework with an associated process was drawn up, focusing on practical usefulness together with the fundamental idea that sustainability cannot be a sub requirement but must be the overall requirement present in all stages of the process. The framework contains an overview, description of activities, links to external tools and documents, and finally a checklist to be completed after each stage. Depending on which stakeholder uses the framework, there are different examples and suggestions for activities and tools. Contrary to many other assessment schemes, the SIRen process focuses on the renovation process itself, and the self-evaluation gives a numerical value that represents to what extent the actors have considered and implemented different aspects of sustainability in the stages of the renovation process. The SIRen process was partially implemented in four renovation projects during the iterative development of the SIRen framework.

The Semarang Old City revitalization has changed its physical appearance significantly, from a slum and crowded area to a more organized, pleasant, and attractive one. The revitalization is one of the Mayor's missions after being reelected in 2015 to enhance the Old City’s image as a prominent historical tourist destination. The government established a regulation prohibiting informal activities in the Old City. Informality is considered an interference in urban areas, including spaces that accommodate informal activities through illegal acquisition. However, informal activities persist in the Old City, shifting the physical setting and transforming the spatial utilization. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the transformation of informal spaces in the Old City after revitalization. Quantitative methods were used by distributing questionnaires to informal activity workers and interviews with the Old City manager. The results showed spatial utilization and relation transformations, a close relationship between informal and formal activities, and no conflict regarding spatial utilization. However, the relationship between formal and informal spaces changed after the revitalization. Formal activities prefer clear spatial boundaries, making informal space utilization and pattern more dynamic.
