Sustaining Agile Beyond Adoption

Abstract: Agile approaches are adopted in industry to improve outcomes from software development, and are increasingly the subject of research studies. However, adoption is not the end of the story. Agile requires on-going change and commitment in order to become sustainable and embedded within teams and organisations. This study explores current perceptions of post-adoptive agility. We asked 50 practitioners 'what does agile sustainability mean to you?'. Analysis of practitioner comments identified four themes: being c… Show more

“…The benefits of agile operations cannot be sustained and strengthened without a determined effort from the organization; without a clear knowledge of what value entails at all levels; and without influencing minds, environment and attitudes. The environment in which agile operations are supported and maintained, as well as the larger community, is crucial (Barroca et al , 2018).…”

“…The sustained interest in this topic is reflected in practice along with IS most notably in conference proceedings (i.e., tracks at AMCIS, ICIS and HICSS) and software engineering (SE) publication outlets. Recent studies highlight the shift in practitioner's interest from employing to sustaining ASD use (Barroca et al, 2018;Gregory et al, 2016;Senapathi & Drury-Grogan, 2020), organisation-wide transformations (Conboy & Carroll, 2019;Paasivaara et al, 2018), and overcoming issues in globally distributed environments (Calefato et al, 2019;Shrivastava & Rathod, 2017). Additionally, recent surveys indicate that ASD adoption rates continue to increase as organisations employ ASD methods to a higher percentage of their overall software projects (Version One, 2018, 2019.…”
