“…Moreover, this peak was shifted to 1643 cm À1 , which is possibly due to protonation of carboxylate groups. 54 Therefore, these results confirm that the alginate coating remains on the scaffold after 14 days of immersion in PBS. The FTIR spectrum of the T-Gel-c-(PL/ P123-c-BG) scaffold is reported in Fig.…”

“…The release efficacy of a hydrogel is mostly influenced by diffusion and swelling (Pasparakis & Bouropoulos, 2006). Cross-linking reduces the diffusion efficiency in a hydrogel (Pasparakis & Bouropoulos, 2006) as well as the swelling ratio.…”

“…Cross-linking reduces the diffusion efficiency in a hydrogel (Pasparakis & Bouropoulos, 2006) as well as the swelling ratio. This can also be seen in our results, as the hydrogel's release efficacy went down after cross-linking.…”

“…The swelling behavior was occurred when the beads tend to absorb water in order to fill the void regions of the polymer network within the beads that remain dehydrated until they reach the equilibrium state. This phenomenon will cause the losing of polymer network at the presence of osmotic pressure as well as weakened mechanical strength and lastly tend to the leakage of enzymes [12]. This explanation also supported by Li et al [13] where the serious swelling of the beads may reduce the enzyme loading efficiency, mechanical strength and recycling stability.…”
