Sympathetic Ophthalmia – a Contribution to Immunology, Clinic and Current Imaging

Abstract: Background Sympathetic ophthalmia (SO) is a rare inflammation of an operated or injured eye that spreads to the fellow eye. It is typically a bilateral granulomatous panuveitis. The traumatized eye is referred to as inciting eye and the fellow eye as sympathizing eye. The pathophysiology of the disease is not entirely understood, but there is strong evidence of an autoimmune genesis. Patients/Material and Methods A selective literature search on epidemiology, immunology, clinical features and risk fa… Show more

“…Curiously, the expression of CHST2 was higher in the contralateral control eye at five days after AB when compared to the contralateral control at 14 days after AB ( Figure 8 B). Previous studies have shown that in certain instances a corneal injury can trigger an immune response in the contralateral uninjured cornea [ 49 , 50 , 51 , 52 , 53 , 54 , 55 ]. Thus, the corneal injury could lead to changes in CHST2 expression in the contralateral eye over time.…”

“…There exists numerous of immunocompetent cells in corneal limbus and conjunctival tissues. Intraocular antigen and mycotoxins will contact the conjunctiva or corneal limbus, enter the systemic lymphatic system and activate the human immune system, which will cause immune in ammation in contralateral eye [7]. Although there are no reports about sympathetic ophthalmia happened in FK patients, some studies have shown related immune changes in contralateral eyes .The collection of intraocular samples such as aqueous humor is invasive, therefore we replaced them with tear samples to re ect the in ammatory response because it has little discomfort and is noninvasive [8].…”
