Synergistic Antibacterial Potential of 6-Pentyl-α-pyrone Lactone and Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles against Multidrug-Resistant Enterobacterales Isolated from Urinary Tract Infections in Humans

Abstract: Urinary tract infection (UTI) is one of the most common bacterial infections in the world, which is associated with high morbidity and mortality rates. Enterobacterales species are considered the most causative agent for UTI, especially uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC). Here, we investigated the antibacterial activity of the green fungal metabolite, 6-pentyl α pyrone lactone, alone or in combination with zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) against multidrug-resistant Enterobacterales recovered from UTI. The… Show more

“…However, a moderate sensitivity level was observed for chloramphenicol (47.37%), followed by ciprofloxacin and tigecycline (40.35 and 42.11%, respectively). In previous reports, high resistance levels were detected for the abovementioned antimicrobial agents (Abd El-Aziz and Gharib, 2015;Elmonir et al, 2021;Kotb et al, 2022).…”

“…Potent antimicrobial effects, alongside other favorable properties, have been reported for metallic nanoparticles [4,12,56,57]. Although there are many reports regarding the investigation of the antibacterial properties of metallic nanoparticles and application of them, only a minority have included resistant bacterial species [7,58].…”

“…The antimicrobial effect of ZnONPs against the investigated isolates is shown in the MIC values ranging from 0.015 to 32 µg/mL. Nevertheless, the MICs decreased 5–12-fold for 6-pentyl-α-pyrone lactone ( 40 ) and 3–11-fold for ZnONPs, after their combination [ 62 ].…”
