Synovial cell sarcoma in a sulphur‐crested cockatoo (Cacatua galerita)

Abstract: A 13-year-old sulphur-crested cockatoo (Cacatua galerita) was presented with a mass surrounding the right elbow joint. Radiographs showed a soft tissue mass. The right wing was amputated. “…SYNOVIAL cell sarcomas (SCS) are malignant mesenchymal tumours arising from synoviocytes (Pool and Thompson 2002). They are rare tumours in animals, but are most frequently reported in dogs (Whitelock and others 1997, Fox and others 2002), and occasionally in cats (Liptak and others 2004), horses (Edens and others 2001), cattle (Pool and Thompson 2002), ferrets (Lloyd and Wood 1996) and psittacines (Van Der Horst and others 1996, Agren and others 2001). Maned wolves ( Chrysocyon brachyurus ) are the largest of the South American canids.…”

“…Synovial tumours have been described in man and dogs, in addition to cattle, cats, ferrets and birds (Lloyd and Wood, 1996;Van Der Horst et al, 1996;Craig et al, 2002;Liptak et al, 2004;Oyamada et al, 2004). In dogs, these tumours occur typically in large joints and tendon sheaths of the extremities, most commonly the stifle joint (Thompson and Pool, 2002).…”
