by methylolation with formaldehyde. Special preparative methods were necessary to achieve the high degree of purity required for further investigations, since several concurrent reactions could occur. (I) and (11) formed stable dihydrates with water. The identity of (I) and (11) was proved by determination of nitrogen content and molecular weight as well as by IR-spectra. The reaction-optimum was found and 113 H. NIEBERGALL uiid H. SEITZ controlled by means of thin layer chromotagraphy. Under optimal conditions the amount of pure product (I) was 40% (glyoxal-addition), the amount of product (11) was 97% (methylolation), either related to its initial urea. Einleitung
