Syntheses and photophysical properties of some 4‐arylpyridinium salts

Abstract: A number of 4-arylpyridines, many methoxy substituted, were prepared by an efficient two-step method involving aryl Grignard addition to 1-methyl-4-piperidone and direct aromatization of the resulting 4-aryl-4-piperidinols. The pyridines were N-alkylated to give sulfonate salts desired for their fluorescent properties. Study of selected compounds as laser dyes revealed several structures to be efficient dyes lasing in the 530-550 nm range. Two new diazaquaterphenyls were prepared and were quaternized. These sa… Show more

“…The synthesis in the same manner, but with hexadecyloxy chains resulted in the production of pure 9,10-bis(4-hexadecyloxyphenyl)anthracene (11). 4-Ethynyl-4′octyloxybiphenyl and 9,10-dibromoanthracene were synthesised via literature methods [10,12,13]. These two reactants were combined in a Sonogashira reaction to produce 9,10-bis(4′-octyloxybiphenyl-4-ylethynyl)anthracene (12).…”

“…There are very few examples of stable π-conjugated liquids [15][16][17]. This novel material could be exploited in photonic applications including upconversion, as it retains the flow of a liquid and enables diffusion through solution in a condensed state [12].…”

“…The electron-donating ability of amines is inverted upon protonation or quaternization, particularly the pyridinium ion is a common acceptor unit [24, 25], but ammonium ions have also received considerable attention [26]. The influence of environmental conditions on the electron donating or accepting capability of amino groups and azines can be used to alter the optical properties of a chromophore by tuning the strength of the nitrogen-containing donor (amines) and acceptor (azines) groups.…”
