Synthesis and Characterization of Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles Using Acacia caesia Bark Extract and Its Photocatalytic and Antimicrobial Activities

Abstract: This paper presents the green synthesis and characterization of ZnO nanoparticles and their microbial and photocatalytic application. The green synthesis of ZnO nanoparticles was carried out using Zinc nitrate hexahydrate and the bark extract of Acacia caesia (L.) Willd. The nanoparticles were synthesized at an optimum temperature of 65 °C followed by calcination at 400 °C. The samples were characterized using UV-visible spectroscopy, SEM, XRD, FTIR and EDX analysis. UV-visible spectroscopy showed a characteri… Show more

“…In accordance to surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect, at a certain wavelength range conducting electrons start oscillate. At 370nm, spectra revealed a characteristic absorbance [14] in Figure 1. This can be attributable to intrinsic bandgap absorption of ZnO and electron transitions from the valence band to the conduction band.…”

“…Additionally, the bioformulated ZnO-NPs fabricated using Thymbra Spicata L. extract revealed anticandidal activity against the C. albicans ATTC 90028 strain demonstrating a relative suppressive zone of 10.2 mm [ 23 ]. Furthermore, Acacia caesia bark extract assisted in the green biofabrication of ZnO-NPs demonstrating relative suppressive zones of 12 and 15 mm for zinc oxide nanoparticle concentrations of 500 and 1000 µg per well, respectively [ 24 ]. Dalbergia sissoo fresh leaf extract mediated green bioformulation of biofabricated ZnO-NPs with antimicrobial effectiveness against Escherichia coli , Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans strains [ 25 ].…”
