Synthesis of Three Dimensional Nickel Cobalt Oxide Nanoneedles on Nickel Foam, Their Characterization and Glucose Sensing Application

Abstract: In the present work, NiCo2O4 nanostructures are fabricated in three dimensions (3D) on nickel foam by the hydrothermal method. The nanomaterial was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The nanostructures exhibit nanoneedle-like morphology grown in 3D with good crystalline quality. The nanomaterial is composed of nickel, cobalt and oxygen atoms. By using the favorable porosity of the nanomaterial and the substrate itself, a sens… Show more

“…Among these cobalt-based metal oxides, NiCo 2 O 4 possesses more advantages than other Co-based metal oxides owing to the existence of Ni and Co ions. Up to now, NiCo 2 O 4 has been fabricated with many different morphologies including hollow nanorods [23], nanoneedles [22,24] as well as nanosheet arrays [25]. However, it is still necessary and meaningful to synthesize new structures with different morphologies for enhancing the catalytic activities of NiCo 2 O 4 in glucose oxidation.…”

“…A few recent investigations describe the use of Ni and Co bimetallic nanostructures for glucose sensing [4,6,11]. Nanoparticles of CoNi oxides have been also tested for sensing other biomolecules such as uric acid, due to the synergistic effect of the two metals in the alloy and the improved stability of the oxides respect to those of pure metals [3].…”

“…Glucose is one the biomolecules of greater importance in clinical diagnosis and food and pharmaceutical industries. The development of new glucose sensors is the aim of recent investigations [4][5][6][7]. Metallic nanostructures have been tested to replace enzymatic biosensors, to improve stability and selectivity [2,8,9].…”
