Synthesis of waterborne polyurethane ink binder with high T‐peel strength and its application in biaxially oriented polypropylene film printing

Abstract: In order to improve adhesion properties of waterborne polyurethane (WPU) inks on biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) films, herein, a liquid polyester polyol BY3003 with long‐branched aliphatic chains was used to prepare WPU latexes suitable for BOPP films printing. The application of BY3003 made the surface tension of the prepared latexes not more than 43 mN/m, while that of traditional WPU latex exceeded 55 mN/m. Accordingly, the T‐peel strength of the inks made from these latexes was all above 0.8 N/15 … Show more

“…On the basis of this unique structure, waterborne polyurethane can be tailored into different structure by changing the reaction feeds, such as polydiol, hydrophilic chain extender, isocynate, even include neutralizer. By structure design, polyurethane dispersion is regarded as one of the most important green polymers in many applications such as coatings [32,33] , biological fluids [34,35], adhensive [36][37][38], and water-separation [39] because of its good mechanical properties, adhesive properties, film-forming performance and low costs [40,41]. It is now one of the most rapid developing and active branches of polyurethane chemistry [42].…”

“…Common binders, also called "resins," include acrylics, polyurethanes, polyvinylbutyral, and nitrocellulose [33]. Besides adhesion, the type of binder affects viscosity, scratch resistance, flexibility, and gloss [26,27], whilst additives vary according to the targeted application [28]. Plasticizer is a common additive in ink formulation, aiming at softening binders and improving flexibility [29].…”

“…Consequently, the development of highperformance polyacrylate latex binders is highly necessary for the improvement of ink quality. 8 It has been proved that designing latex particles with core-shell composite structure and introducing some crosslinkable groups into latexes are the most effective strategy for improving high-performance polyacrylate latexes. [9][10][11] Thus, there is a huge body of literature on the synthesis and properties of self-crosslinkable polyacrylate latexes with core-shell composite structure.…”
