Tailor‐welded blanks bring multiple benefits to car design

Abstract: Describes the development of laser welded tailored blanks and the benefits they bring to car design. One of the principle advantages is weight reduction, which steel makers have seized on to counteract the``threat'' from aluminium and have invested in a number of laser welding facilities. One of these lines, at Laser Welded Blanks (LWB) in the UK West Midlands and supplied by VIL, is described in detail. The system features the VIL-developed and patented edge preparation station (EPS) that incorporates a preci… Show more

“…For cars the first benefit was the most important one, but the weight reduction has become very important too in the last decades. Since its introduction in 1985 [1,2] a lot of research has been performed on a wide range of aspects of TWB. Most of the research however, have been focused on steel alloys and aimed at typical press forming processes as used in the automotive industry.…”

“…In recently years, the use of tailor-welded blanks (TWBs) has increased in practice not only in the automotive industry but also in other manufacturing industries such as electrical goods, electronic packaging and construction markets [1,2]. TWBs are composed of two or more welded metal sheets with different thicknesses, shapes, strengths or even materials.…”

“…Tailored Blanks (TBs), consisting of different thickness plates or different strength plate, is newly concept material that can reduce total weight of automobile; thus, it is available to decrease amount of exhaust NOx [1][2][3][4] gas. To manufacture the TBs, we have investigated some joining techniques.…”
