Taurodontism, Root Dilaceration, and Tooth Transposition: A Radiographic Study of a Population with Nonsyndromic Cleft Lip and/or Palate

Abstract: Taurodontism is significantly more prevalent in Brazilians with nonsyndromic CL/P than in persons without clefts; whereas the prevalence of root dilaceration no different from that in the control group. However, root dilacerations in anterior teeth were increased in groups 1 and 2 when compared to the control group.

“…In our study, it was noted the presence of taurodontia in only 7.9% of cases, where it presented with a predominance in the mandible. Although this anomaly is related mainly as a marker of orofacial anomalies, it was noted that even in a normal population it can be a complication mainly for endodontic treatment, due the taurodontia was decreased the root surface area and for prosthetic treatments that require an adequate occlusal load 15,16 .…”

“…It is well accepted that both genetics and environmental factors play a role in the development of cleft lip and palate (Vieira 2012). A higher frequency of dental abnormalities has been reported in patients with cleft lip and/or palate than in the general population (Al Jamal et al 2010;Letra et al 2007;Paranaiba et al 2013;Weckwerth et al 2016); among them are dental agenesis, supernumerary teeth, microdontia, taurodontism, root laceration, fused teeth, ectopic eruption, and enamel hypoplasia (Letra et al 2007;Melo Filho et al 2015;Paranaiba et al 2013).…”

“…The enlargement of the pulp chamber with a consequent apical displacement of the pulpal floor in multirooted teeth is a phenomenon that is generally identified radiologically, not clinically, and affects many types of dental therapies: complicates endodontic treatments and reduces the root surface area available for anchoring in orthodontics or adequate resistance to occlusal load for pontics (MacDonald 2020). This anomaly has been investigated in patients with cleft lip and palate in which, from a panoramic radiograph, it can be diagnosed, and its classification is based on the extension of the enlargement (Weckwerth et al 2016). However, there is no consensus in the literature regarding the methodology to classify taurodontism; therefore, we believe that using the term pulp enlargement to define those with this condition is more appropriate.…”
