Geological relationships preserved in the New Brunswick segment of the Appalachian orogen are key to deciphering the complex tectonic events that occurred during the closing of the Paleozoic Iapetus Ocean. These events can be explained in terms of geodynamic interactions between eight lithotectonic terranes. The first, the Caledonia terrane, comprises Neoproterozoic volcanic arc sequences and comagmatic plutons considered to form part of the microcontinent of Avalonia. The seven other terranes are associated with the microcontinent of Ganderia and consist of (1) Brookville terrane-Mesoproterozoic to Neoproterozoic platformal carbonates and Neoproterozoic to Early Cambrian plutonic rocks, (2) New River terrane-Neoproterozoic volcanic arc sequences and comagmatic plutons overlain by a Cambrian Penobscot volcanic arc sequence, In New Brunswick, closure of the Iapetus Ocean is attributed to four major tectonic episodes: (1) the Penobscot orogeny, which accreted the Miramichi, Annidale, and St. Croix terranes to the New River terrane on the trailing edge of Ganderia by closing a Penobscot backarc basin in the Early Ordovician, (2) the Taconic orogeny, which accreted the Popelogan terrane on the leading edge of Ganderia to the Laurentian margin in the Late Ordovician and effectively closed the main tract of the Iapetus Ocean, (3) the Salinic orogeny, which accreted the Elmtree and Miramichi terranes to the Laurentian margin by closing the Tetagouche backarc basin in the Silurian, and (4) the Acadian orogeny, which accreted the Caledonia terrane (Avalonia) to the Brookville and New River terranes on the trailing edge of Ganderia in the latest Silurian to earliest Devonian and in the process closed the last remaining oceanic tract in the northeastern Appalachians. RÉSUMÉLes corrélations géologiques préservées dans la partie du Nouveau-Brunswick de l'orogène des Appalaches sont essentielles pour bien comprendre le déroulement des événements tectoniques complexes survenus au moment de la fermeture de l'océan Iapetus, pendant le Paléozoïque. Il est possible d'expliquer ces événements par des interactions géodynamiques entre huit terranes lithotectoniques. The following trace fossils have been recognised in the Lower Muschelkalk of Raciborowice Gorne (North Sudetic Synclinorium, SW Poland): Archaeonassa fossulata, Balanoglossites triadicus, ?Gastrochaenolites isp., Lockeia isp., Palaeophycus tubularis, Palaeophycus isp., ?Planolites beverleyensis, P. montanus, Planolites isp., ?Protovirgularia isp., Rhizocorallium commune var. auriforme, R. commune var. irregulare, R. jenense, Skolithos linearis, Thalassinoides suevicus and Trypanites weisei. Coprolites and an unidentified trace fossil A are also described. The trace fossils allow the discrimination of five ichnoassociations in the Raciborowice Gorne section: (IA 1) Rhizocorallium- Pholeus, (IA 2) Rhizocorallium-Palaeophycus, (IA 3) Thalassinoides, (IA 4) Trypanites-Balanoglossites and (IA 5) Planolites-Palaeophycus. The Lower Muschelkalk succession was deposited on a shallow carbonate ramp affected by frequent storms. Deposition commenced with sedimentation in a restricted lagoon on the inner ramp with a short episode of sabkha formation. It continued on the middle and outer ramp and then on a skeletal shoal of the outer ramp and in an open basin. Ichnoassociation IA 5 is related to a maximum transgression that commenced with the deposition of the Spiriferina Bed and which probably marked the opening of the Silesian-Moravian Gate. The basin underwent two shallowing episodes, as evidenced by ichnoassociations IA 3-IA 4, resulting in the formation of hardgrounds. Bathymetric changes in the Raciborowice Gorne section correspond well with a general transgressive trend in the Germanic Basin.

An assemblage of trace fossils comprising Asteriacites stelliformis, A. quinquefolius, Biformites insolitus, Helminthoidichnites? isp., Lingulichnus isp., Lockeia siliquaria, Palaeophycus tubularis, Planolites isp., Protovirgularia isp. A, Protovirgularia isp. B, Protovirgularia isp. C, Psammichnites isp., Rusophycus isp., and Treptichnus isp. from the Po Formation (Visean-Serpukhovian) exposed along the base of Ganmachidam Hill near the village of Chichong, Spiti Valley in the Himalaya, is described. Storm beds (tempestites) are highly bioturbated. Sedimentary structures such as hummocky cross-stratification (HCS), low-angle planar and trough cross beds, and shallow, slightly asymmetrical gutter casts are observed. The overall trace fossil assemblage indicates the presence of upper shoreface to lower shoreface Cruziana ichnofacies of an open shelf.
