Technical Efficiency and Total Factor Productivity Growth in the Hazelnut Agricultural Sales Cooperatives Unions in Turkey

Abstract: Abstract-This study measures the production efficiencies and total factor productivity changes of Hazelnut Agricultural Sales Cooperatives Unions (HASCUs) in Turkey over the period [2004][2005][2006][2007][2008]. Turkey produces %78.2 hazelnut production of world and gives service to 233,820 farmers in the Black Sea Region of Turkey. To measure production efficiencies of these units, Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) Approach and Malmquist Productivity Indexes are used. In the our efficiency analysis, the data o… Show more

“…Currently, NGOs such as Ganja Agribusiness Association (GABA) are in operation with the goal to improve the productivity of the agricultural products and sustainability of hazelnut production. Their activities with farmers involve human potential development and knowledge, and resource transfer through training on various subjects related to agriculture [14]. Besides, NGOs also provide agricultural inputs and various grants [6,15].…”

“…Turkey is a top producer, with a supply of 70% to 75% of the world hazelnut production. In addition, Turkey is the largest exporter of hazelnut, followed by Germany, Italy, USA, France, Canada, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Spain, Austria, Belgium, Switzerland, Poland, Ukraine, and the Netherlands (Candemir et al 2011;Edible nuts, food, and agriculture 2014). Most of the nutshell grown in Turkey is burned or left in the agricultural land after harvest (Copur et al 2007).…”

“…The most used DEA models are: CCR [1] and BCC [8]. The first assumes constant returns-to-scale, while the latter works under variable returns-to-scale, replacing the axiom of proportionality by convexity.…”

“…Classic DEA models [1,6] were used to analyse the relative efficiency of energy consumption in the agriculture by [7]. In [8], the production relative efficiencies and productivity changes of agricultural cooperatives were measured using DEA and the Malmquist index. In [9], the beef cattle production was examined using a unitary input DEA model combined to relative efficiency measures generated by the inverted DEA frontier.…”
