Techno-economic-enviro optimization analysis of diesel/PV/wind with pumped hydro storage for Mentawai Island microgrid

Abstract: This paper presents a techno-economic analysis and environment assessment of hybrid photovoltaic (PV), wind turbine (WT), and diesel genset (DG) with pumped hydro storage (PHS) for a rural microgrid system. The analysis is carried out for a case study with Mentawai community load demand of 165.44 kWh/day at a peak load of 20.46 kW. The Homer simulation results show that there are eight feasible configurations, which the optimal hybrid system configuration to supply community load is the configuration with PV/D… Show more

“…When the power generation units are facing a peak load or lack resources, it is possible to use the electricity stored in the storage units. The next characteristic of stand-alone microgrids is using a “support unit,” which is usually a diesel generator, besides using the energy storage unit [ 9 , 47 ]. Islanded microgrids can produce power in a place close to the power consumption, which decreases energy transmission losses.…”

“…This means that the expected electricity needs are not the same as the current electricity needs of the community. This is certainly a concern of the government to accelerate the development of renewable energy technology to anticipate energy crises in the future so that independence and energy security are maintained [1]. At the moment, the most important thing is to get power from traditional sources, especially during the day and night.…”

“…They indicate socioeconomic, institutional, technological and environmental aspects as issues when engaging the local communities. From the socio-economic perspective, Syafii, Wati, and Fahreza (2021) study on pumped hydro storage in Remote Area Mentawai Island and Setiawan et al (2021) study on fishery cold storage development using photovoltaic technology in Fisherman Rural Area are agree to implement Techno-Economic Analysis when tackling the Energy Related Technology Development. However, before doing a Techno-Economic Analysis, we need to map an Energy Potential in remote and rural areas (Baghta, Aprilianti, Aryani, Jufri, & Utomo, 2020).…”
