Given such properties as wear resistance, corrosion resistance, heat resistance, contact and cyclic strength, iron and nickel aluminides can be used as coatings in friction pairs for various purposes. The object of research is the process of obtaining plasma-sprayed coatings from powders based on iron and nickel aluminides. The task of research is the determination and comparison of the structure, chemical composition, and wear resistance of coatings from powders of iron aluminide and nickel aluminide, obtained by the method of atmospheric plasma spraying. To reduce the oxidation of powders during spraying, the conditions for generating a laminar plasma jet were created. Such conditions were provided by the specially developed structure of the electric arc plasma gun and the operating parameters of coating spraying. As a result of the correct choice of spraying modes, completely melted splats were formed during the collision of powder particles with the surface. The resulting coatings had a layered microstructure with microcracks and peeling. The porosity and characteristics of the delamination of the coatings depend on both the modes and the spraying technology. Tribological tests of the coatings were carried out under conditions of dry metal-on-metal sliding friction in a pair with high-speed steel. It is shown that the wear of nickel aluminide coatings under these conditions is 2–2.5 times lower than that of iron aluminide coatings. The coefficient of friction of iron aluminide coatings is slightly lower than that of nickel aluminide coatings. The wear of samples made of 30CrMnSi steel is 3–4 times higher than samples with coatings. The difference in the wear of the coatings is explained by the more intense oxidation of iron aluminide in the friction process. Conclusions were drawn regarding the possibility of using the investigated coatings in various friction pairs of structural elements, in particular in the automotive industry

This paper reports data on the dynamic coefficient of friction and wear of materials of different types of friction pads and brake discs obtained from experimental research during braking under bench conditions. It was established that on the basis of the chemical composition of the materials of the friction pads with codes, in the temperature range of 100–450 °C with a step of 50 °C, the ratio of the maximum to the minimum wear of the disc varies from 6.0 to 10.0. The value of the disc wear ratio at 800 and 1000 brakings, respectively, in the temperature range of 100–250 °C and 100–450 °C was 7.6 and 14.0. This indicates that for pad materials of type A, B, C, and D under the second thermal regime, the linear wear of the working surfaces of the discs is greater than under the first thermal regime. And for the pad materials of type E and F, the wear of the discs was the same. This indicates that the use of traditional pads is characterized by a higher thermal tension of the disc brake friction pair; the absolute temperature values are in the unfavorable zone of 400–700 °C. That, in turn, could lead to both phase changes and thermal fatigue aging of materials and, as a result, to the deterioration of their tribological and thermophysical characteristics in operation. Thus, the implementation of the method of selecting pad components could improve the performance of disc brake devices of cars

The movement of motor vehicles at high speeds is impossible without a braking system capable of ensuring high braking efficiency. It has been established that the most unstable link of the braking system is the brake mechanism, since from the energy point of view, braking with friction brakes is the process of converting part of the mechanical energy of the motor vehicle into heat. Braking is a long process during which many counterbody parameters change, in particular, thermophysical parameters due to temperature changes, friction coefficient, etc. If, under these circumstances, the surface and volume temperatures exceed the permissible values, then the frictional properties of the friction pairs and the conditions of the interaction of the parts change, which leads to a change in the characteristics of the brake mechanisms and the brake system as a whole. The standards of most countries and international prescriptions regulate braking performance meters not only for one-time emergency braking with cold brakes but also for emergency braking performed after the conversion of a given amount of energy into heat during a given time. It was found that the preservation of the necessary braking efficiency after the conversion of a given amount of energy into heat will be ensured only if the braking system has sufficient energy capacity. The object of the research is the distribution of heat flows in the elements of the brake mechanism, which determine the critical temperature of the friction surfaces. It was established that F. Charron's formula cannot correctly estimate such a distribution due to taking into account only the thermophysical properties of materials of friction pairs. It is shown that the influence of the design parameters of the brake and its modes of operation on the distribution of heat flows in the drum brake of a motor vehicle can also be estimated on grid thermal models with the involvement of the "Fourier-2xyz" software complex.
