Ten species of Culicoides Latreille (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) newly recorded from Thailand

Abstract: A survey of biting midges in animal sheds, mangroves and beaches along the Andaman coastal region in southern Thailand between April 2012 and May 2013 collected 10 species of Culicoides which were not previously known from Thailand. These new records are C. arenicola, C. flavipunctatus, C. hui, C. kinari, C. kusaiensis, C. parabubalus, C. quatei, C. spiculae, C. pseudocordiger and C. tamada. An updated checklist of species of Culicoides reported from Thailand is provided.

“…Although entomological surveys were undertaken in the Seychelles early in the past century [54], only two inventories were published for the islands. The oldest one [54] reported two species, C. leucosticus , an Afrotropical species, and C. kusaiensis , an Australasian species extending to Southeast Asia: Melanesia; Micronesia; Australia (Queensland) [67]; Thailand [68]; China [67]; and Malaysia [54]. This species list was further completed with a description of a new species from the Aldabra island, Seychelles, named C. adamskii [55].…”

“…These results will be a useful source to collect Culicoides more effectively. In addition, new species of Culicoides as a vector of arboviruses are continuously being discovered [ 25 27 ]. In Korea, new Culicoides species were discovered in 2013 [ 28 ].…”

“…A survey of biting midges in animal sheds, mangroves and beaches along the Andaman coastal region of southern Thailand has reported a new record of Culicoides, such as C. arenicola, C. flavipunctatus, C. hui, C. kinari, C. kusaiensis, C. parabubalus, C. quatei, C. spiculae, C. pseudocordiger and C. tamada. This report also updated the list of Culicoides in Thailand [95], but the transmission vectors are still unknown.…”

“…These results are the first report of AHS serotype 1 in Southeast Asia and outside Africa. However, transmission vectors during outbreaks are still not clear in Thailand, but the important vector, C. imicola, has been identified in Thailand and neighboring countries [92,95].…”
