Terahertz-light quantum tuning of a metastable emergent phase hidden by superconductivity

Abstract: 'Sudden' quantum quench and prethermalization have become a cross-cutting theme for discovering emergent states of matter. Yet this remains challenging in electron matter, especially superconductors. The grand question of what is hidden underneath superconductivity (SC) appears universal, but poorly understood. Here we reveal a long-lived gapless quantum phase of prethermalized quasiparticles (QPs) after a single-cycle terahertz (THz) quench of a NbSn SC gap. Its conductivity spectra is characterized by a shar… Show more

“…At even larger peak electric fields, as in the case of SC Nb 3 Sn investigated in Ref. 45, the pump pulse destroys the SC condensate and one eventually access a perturbed nonequilibrium state lasting for long time scales, but oscillations due to SC resonances disappear.…”

“…Such THz photon driven coherence mechanism complements the spontaneous symmetry protection mechanism in the ground state. However, its observation requires intense THz pump and THz conductivity probe spectroscopy measurements [18][19][20][21][22] of the coherent phonon-dressed TPS, which has never been demonstrated so far.…”

“…From an experimental viewpoint, there appears to be a preference towards Method I, potentially due to its simplicity and the long relaxation of the excitations compared to the probe width (see e.g. [1,3,28]. A notable exception is Ref.…”
