Textile Quality Depletion due to Household Machine Wash – Ways to Measure and Impacts of Wash Duration and Temperature on Textiles

Abstract: Washing machines should not only deliver good removal of stains, but also take care of the garments. Mechanical action produced by the washing machine has a twofold impact: It supports the removal of stains, but it also influences the structure of the textiles negatively and is, therefore, critical to textile care. Most washing machines are currently assessed by consumer organisations and political regulations, such as energy labelling, just for their washing properties. However, a long programme may provide a… Show more

“…However, in Finland only a few surveys exist, and the most recent was published in 2002 (Aalto, ). In many studies, the focus has been on environmentally friendly washing and laundry procedures as well as washing technology and agents in processes, such as decreasing the use of energy, water, and amounts of chemicals ( Honisch, Stamminger, & Bockmühl, ; Abeliotis et al, ; Cameron, ; Gooijer & Stamminger, ; Hellmut & Dreja, ; Kalak & Cierpiszewski, ; Kruschwitz, Ausburg, & Stamminger, ; Laitala & Kjeldsberg, ; Laitala et al, ; Lambert et al, ; Scheid et al, ; Schmitz & Stamminger, ).…”

“…According to Sinner, the factors which determine the laundering quality are: chemical action, mechanical action, temperature and time. There is also a fifth quality parameter, water, which was added by Stamminger later, in order to expose its significance [1]. Water enables wetting with superseding air from fibres; it is a transportation system for heat and kinetic energy, a dispersing agent which, with help of detergent, absorbs inorganic and organic impurities and micro-organisms, thus preventing their re-deposition onto a textile's surface or onto parts of the washing machine [2][3].…”
