Texture Atlas Generation for Inconsistent Meshes and Point Sets

Abstract: In order to compute texture atlases with low stretch and hardly visible texture seams existing texture mapping tools pose high demands on the quality of surface representations like consistent orientation, watertightness, or manifoldness which many models commonly used in day-to-day modeling practice fail to meet. In this paper we propose an approach that bridges the gap between requirements of high quality texture mapping tools and poor mesh connectivity of models used in practice. In the spirit of classical … Show more

“…This method is the most widely used now, but it will cause seam between different pictures. Jiating Chen uses the method of synthetizing solid texture to render surface model with texture [4]. Synthetizing solid texture does not need to parameterize the model vertexes and can eliminate distortion caused by parameterization, but the storage of texture data is too large.…”

“…For example, [19] used the method of [11] to get the first texture mapping for 3D object, then found 2D-to-2D matching between video images to get a video sequence mapping effect. Most existing work on texture mapping are mesh-based methods, [21], [2] developed texture mapping algorithms on point sets of 3D objects.…”

“…One common case is performing finite element analysis, but other applications include visualization or texture mapping [10]. At this stage generally a mesh is constructed using primitive elements such as tetrahedra or hexahedra.…”
