The purpose of this work was to investigate the size-relative effectiveness of clove oil as an anaesthetic for rainbow trout and goldfish. In total, 128 rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) (two groups of 20-23 and 30-33 cm mean fork length) and 160 goldfish (Carassius auratus) (four size groups of 1.5-2.5, 5-7, 11-15 and 20-25 cm) were anaesthetized at different clove oil concentrations of 50, 100, 150 mg·l -1 for trouts and 75, 100, 150 mg·l -1 for goldfish. Rainbow trout exhibited total loss of balance and no response to external stimuli with shorter induction time as dosage increased (120.5 s, 64.4 s and 44.3 s, respectively). Goldfish exhibited total loss of balance and no response to external stimuli after induction time that varied with dosage used and body size of fish. The small fish (1.5-7 cm) exhibited shorter induction time which ranged from 84.28 s at 75 mg·l -1 clove oil to 41.14 s at 150 mg·l -1 clove oil. The larger fish had a longer induction time inversely related to the dosage. Recovery time was longer than induction time in both species. Both species recovered within 6 min after anaesthesia at 150 mg·l -1 clove oil. Clove oil did not produce marked changes (P < 0.05) in the physiological indicators of goldfish compared to the control. However, marked changes (P < 0.05) were exhibited in the haematocrit of treated rainbow trout that also exhibited hyperkalaemia and hyperglycaemia (P > 0.05). For both fish species, clove oil was effective, producing minimum stress and zero mortalities, and can be recommended as an effective anaesthetic. Resumo -O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o eugenol como anestésico para a tilápia-do-nilo. Para a concentração ideal, foram avaliados seis tratamentos (50, 75, 100, 150, 200 e 250 mg L -1 ), com dez peixes por tratamento, anestesiados individualmente, acompanhados durante a indução e recuperação. A toxicidade foi estimada pela submissão de 210 peixes a 7 concentrações de eugenol (50, 75, 100, 150, 200, 250, Eugenol as an anesthetic for Nile tilapiaAbstract -The objective of this work was to evaluate eugenol as anesthetic for Nile tilápia. For the best concentration of the anaesthetic, six treatments (50, 75, 100, 150, 200, and 250 mg L -1 ) were evaluated, with ten fi shes per treatment, anesthetised individually and monitored during the induction and recovery. Toxicity was estimated in 210 fi sh submitted to seven eugenol concentrations (50, 75, 100, 150, 200, 250, and 300 mg L -1 ) for 600 s; and for safety margin, 120 fi sh were submitted to 75 mg L -1 for fi ve time intervals (600, 1,200, 1,800, and 2,400 s). The effective concentrations were 50 and 75 mg L were recommended. The higher therapeutic concentration costs R$ 0.065 per liter. Eugenol was effective for euthanasia at 286.55 mg L -1 for 600 s.

The process of catching fish using an anesthetic technique is inseparable from the use of synthetic chemicals (cyanide) that negatively impact the target fish, non-target and on coral reefs. Salah satu cara untuk mengurangi dampak negatif dari sianida adalah dengan mencari alternatif lain yang ramah lingkungan. Salah satu alternatif yang digunakan adalah minyak cengkeh. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui konsentrasi optimal minyak cengkeh terhadap waktu induksi dan waktu pulih ikan zebra blacktail (Dascyllus melanurus). Sampel yang digunakan ditangkap tanpa mengggunakan sianida. Akuarium berukuran 30 x 40 x 50 m diisi dengan air laut. Kemudian dimasukkan beberapa konsentrasi minyak cengkeh yang berbeda (20, 30, 40, 50 dan 60 ppm). Pengamatan terhadap tingkah laku dilakukan untuk menentukan waktu induksi dan waktu pulih. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan waktu induksi terlama terdapat pada konsentrasi 20 ppm dengan waktu rata-rata 321,33 detik dan waktu induksi tercepat terdapat pada konsentrasi 60 ppm dengan waktu rata-rata 28,33 detik.
