This dissertation advances a novel epistemological, methodological, theoretical and empirical analysis for understanding China’s sharp power toward Taiwan and Australia. The epistemological contribution is made through the development of a mixed (positivist, post-positivist) methodology for understanding not only China’s engagement with Taiwan but also of Australia’s strategic importance to Beijing. The theoretical contribution is manifested in the development of the mixed theoretical analysis of realist “stick” and the social constructivist “carrot” approach in understanding China’s attitude towards Taiwan. Positivist and anti-positivistic theories are deployed to advance a critical appreciation of soft-hard power respectively, the thesis seeks to locate the notion of sharp power in epistemological terms. The empirical contribution to knowledge is achieved through the development of a novel framework from an empirical analysis of China’s sharp power in Taiwan and Australia.

ResumoO presente artigo tem como finalidade analisar os principais projetos da Iniciativa OBOR (Um Cinturão, Uma Estrada) -também conhecida como Nova Rota da Seda -e suas consequências para a integração regional. O argumento principal é de que o êxito na implantação da Iniciativa OBOR ampliaria e aprofundaria o sistema sinocêntrico. Ou seja, a crescente assertividade da política externa chinesa revela uma disposição do país de influência não somente sobre a dinâmica de integração da Eurásia, mas de influenciar de maneira mais decisiva sobre as novas configurações de poder no mundo. AbstractThe purpose of this article is to analyze the main projects of the OBOR (One Belt, One Road) initiative -also known as the New Silk Road -and its consequences for regional integration. The main argument is that successful implementation of the OBOR Initiative would broaden and deepen the synocentric system. That is, the growing assertiveness of Chinese foreign policy reveals a willingness of the country not only to influence Eurasian integration dynamics, but to influence more decisively the new power configurations in the world.
