In Padangsidempuan, Indonesia, the Sangkumpal Bonang market is a prominent place for individuals begging. A beggar is a person who earns money in public in various ways in the hopes of receiving charity from others and who engages in activities by exploiting physical impairments to make others feel sorry for them. In addition, some beggars deliberately create physical disabilities and poverty that lead to feelings of compassion from others. However, these beggars’ lives are not as poor as it seems; they live decent and luxurious life. The research focuses on how persons who engage in begging activities manage their front stage, backstage, and impressions. Through a study of dramaturgy, this study employs a qualitative methodology. The results demonstrate that beggars verbally managed impressions by saying, “have mercy, sir, madam.” Using bowls as a symbol of asking, beggars with unclean clothes, sorrowful faces, and sluggish movements remove their hands. Their onstage image takes advantage of physical handicaps, pretending to be crippled, and living an impoverished and nomadic existence to elicit sympathy. It contrasts with a figure in the backstage appearance who is in good physical condition, goes about her daily activities, dresses well, smiles, lives in luxury, and has good social contacts with her family and society.

Mardika market is a strategic location for people engaging in begging activity in Moluccas, Indonesia. A beggar is a person who earns an income in public in various ways and hopes to expect mercy from others, and engages in activities by taking advantage of to make other people feel sorry for them. The research aims to explore the self management of people carrying out begging activities. This study uses a subjective interpretive method through a phenomenological approach based on the theory of symbolic interaction. The results demonstrate that beggars verbally self-management impressions. Nonverbally, beggars with dirty clothes, sad faces, and slow gestures remove their hands using bowls as a sign of asking. Their self-management front appearance takes advantage of physical backwardness, pretending to be disabled, and living a poor and wandering life so that they deserve pity. This differs from a figure who has a robust physical condition, carries out everyday activities, wears proper clothes, displays a cheerful face, and has good social relations with family and society in the self-management behind appearance.

Beggars have largely been leading miserable lives in the lower stratum of society since time immemorial. Government or private-led policies are rarely undertaken to improve the lives of this unfortunate societal segment. The local governments in divisional cities of Bangladesh have adopted a series of interventions aimed at improving the socioeconomic wellbeing of beggars and equipping them with alternative livelihood management options. We evaluated the effectiveness of this intervention (the rehabilitation of beggars) in the Khulna City Corporation (KCC) area, Bangladesh; we gathered a sample of 385 beggars by employing the non-equivalent group design and instrumental variable regression method. The results provide an interesting inference, showing that the rehabilitation program seemingly has no far-reaching significant impact on the socioeconomic wellbeing of the beggars. To be precise, the program provides evidence of no significant differences in earnings, expenditure, food security, or personal wellbeing between the beneficiary and the non-beneficiary group of beggars. In addition, the program fails to deter beggars from continuing to beg, as the result shows no significant association between taking part in the program and begging demotivation. Consequently, the beggars are continuing begging, which indicates a critical policy failure on the part of both government and implementation bodies. Therefore, the study implicitly recommends on-track monitoring and timely evaluation of such interventions so that immediate action can be taken beforehand to empower beggars and move them up the social ladder both socially and economically.
