The biology of Canadian weeds. 139. Rhamnus cathartica L.

Abstract: European buckthorn, Rhamnus cathartica L., is an introduced shrub or small tree of forests, thickets, open pastures, hedgerows, roadsides, and riparian habitats. In Canada, it is found from Alberta east to the Maritimes, but is absent from Newfoundland. It is particularly abundant in southern Ontario. Problems arise from its status as an alternate host for the fungi Puccinia coronata Corda. f. sp. avenae Eriks., which causes crown rust and leaf rust of oats and for Puccinia coronata var. hordei Jin & Steff… Show more

“…Several studies report enhanced colonization of exotic, invasive plant species in less acidic, more fertile sites (e.g., Proulx and Mazumder 1998;Qaderi et al 2009). Both fertilization and entry into forests with mechanized equipment, which may spread seeds and propagules, may cause liming to favor invasions.…”

“…In North America, R. cathartica seems to have an affinity for disturbed, fertile, calcium-rich, moist areas, open woods and woodland edges, but it can tolerate both dry and partially flooded conditions. It avoids extreme shading and drought (Qaderi et al 2009). In North America, common buckthorn can become the dominant understory vegetation, displacing native vegetation through the formation of a dense canopy, thus creating a major threat to native biodiversity (Heidorn 1991;Catling 1997;Moffatt and McLachlan 2004).…”

“…In North America, the soybean aphid and other Hemiptera, such as the green stink bug, Acrosternum hilare (Say), or the Say's stink bug, Chlorochroa sayi Stal., have been commonly observed feeding on R. cathartica in Ontario (Qaderi et al (2009). In a 2-year study, Yoder et al (2008) recorded a total of 32 herbivorous arthropod species representing 20 families and six orders from common buckthorn in Minnesota.…”
