“…They possess a crucial role in stabilizing the sectional unit of the spine and can regulate the spinal kinematic position. It is understood that the substantial sagittal facet joint positioning can restrict the axial rotation and enhance the torsional intensity [ 1 ].…”

“…Yang et al 37 demonstrated that FJT may play an important role in the pathogenesis of lumbar degenerative diseases, using finite element analysis and contour maps visualization. Ke et al 38 found that the combination of FJO and FJT played an important role in the development of lumbar degeneration, including disc and LFJ. More importantly, FJO and FJT do not affect the disc at only the corresponding level; the lumbar spine should be evaluated as a whole.…”

“…Masharawi et al [20] concluded that the presence of FT leads to rotation of facet motion, and facet joints more oriented in the coronal plane limit anteroposterior displacement, which in turn results in rotation towards the sagittal position, which is more pronounced during exion and extension activities, while the occurrence of rotation increases the risk of injury to the annulus brosus, which in turn leads to disc herniation. It has also been suggested that FT leads to asymmetrical stress transmission in the facet joints and corresponding discs, producing stress concentration, which may accelerate degeneration of the disc, which in turn leads to the development of LDH [2].At the same time, FT at the adjacent level of the fusion level increases the phenomenon of stress concentration, which may promote the occurrence of clinical spondylosis after lumbar fusion [21].The presence of FT may also contribute to the tropism of paravertebral muscles, which may also be responsible for the development of LDH [22].In our study, FT was found to be present not only in the horizontal but also in the sagittal position in LDH patients, which is likely because rotation of facet joints occurred. The rotation of facet joints causes the stress tropism of the intervertebral disc, which in turn makes the stress of the intervertebral disc uneven, resulting in the degeneration of the intervertebral disc.…”

“…The facet joints, as an important part of the posterior structure, can not only effectively maintain the stability of the posterior spine, but also reduce the shear stress of the intervertebral disc [1]. Facet joint tropism (FT) refers to left and right facet joint angle differences [2,3]. Most current studies have investigated the relationship between facet joint tropism in the axial plane and lumbar disc herniation, and no relevant studies have been conducted on sagittal plane.…”
