In this paper we present a review of progress in addressing the challenge to understand and describe the vast complexity and multi-level organisation associated with biological systems. We begin with a review of past and current approaches, key lessons, and unresolved challenges, which require a new conceptual framework to address them. After summarizing the core of the problem, which is linked to computational complexity, we review recent developments within the theoretical framework of scale relativity, which offers new insights into the emergence of structure and function (at multiple scales), providing a new integrative approach to biological systems. The theoretical framework describes the critical role of thermodynamics and quantum vacuum fluctuations in the emergence of charge-induced macroscopic quantum fields (effectively a new quantum field theory) at multiple scales, which underpin a macroscopic quantum description of biological systems as a complex exemplar of condensed matter. The theory is validated through a new biomimetic experimental approach, which leads to the emergence of plant and individual cell-like structures with the intrinsic capacity to divide, differentiate and form multicellular structures. We discuss how this theoretical framework could be applied to extend our understanding of cardiac systems biology and physiology, and challenges such as cancer and neurodegenerative disease. We also consider the potential of these new insights to support a new approach to the development of emerging quantum technologies.

A satisfactory model of the biopotentials propagating through the human body is essential for medical diagnostics, particularly for cardiovascular diseases. In our study, we develop the theory, that the propagation of biopotential of cardiac origin (ECG signal) may be treated as the propagation of low-frequency endogenous electromagnetic wave through the human body. We show that within this approach, the velocity of the ECG signal can be theoretically estimated, like for any other wave and physical medium, from the refraction index of the tissue in an appropriate frequency range. We confirm the theoretical predictions by the comparison with a direct measurement of the ECG signal propagation velocity and obtain mean velocity as low as v=1500 m/s. The results shed new light on our understanding of biopotential propagation through living tissue. This propagation depends on the frequency band of the signal and the transmittance of the tissue. This finding may improve the interpretation of the electric measurements, such as ECG and EEG when the frequency dependence of conductance and the phase shift introduced by the tissue is considered. We have shown, that the ECG propagation modifies the amplitude and phase of signal to a considerable extent. It may also improve the convergence of inverse problem in electrocardiographic imaging.

In addition to marking the cell location, numerous regions selected from the comprehensive ontology first generated for the Cardiac Physiome Project (Hunter and Smith, 2016) were mapped. In this study, we developed, coordinated, and integrated several technologies including novel whole organ imaging, software development to support the very first precise 3D neuroanatomical mapping and molecular phenotyping of the intracardiac nervous system (ICN). While qualitative and gross anatomical descriptions of the anatomy of the ICN have been presented, we here bring forth the first comprehensive atlas at large scale of the entire ICN in rat at a single cell resolution. Our work for the first time provides a novel 3D model to precisely integrate anatomical, functional and molecular data in the 3D digitally reconstructed whole heart with high resolution at the micron scale. This work represents the cutting edge in a long history of attempts to understand the anatomical substrate upon which the neuronal control of cardiac function is built. To our knowledge, there has not yet been a comprehensive histological mapping to generate a neurocardiac atlas at cellular and molecular level for the whole heart of any species. We now display the full extent and the position of neuronal clusters on the base and posterior left atrium, and the distribution of molecular phenotypes in that context. In addition we display in this context distinct molecular phenotypes that are defined along the base-to-apex axis, and the present novel discovery of their phenotypical spatial gradients, have not been previously described. The development of these approaches needed to acquire these data has produced method pipelines which can not only achieve the goals of anatomical and molecular mapping of the heart, but also provide the method pipelines for mapping other organs (e.g., stomach, lung, kidney, and liver). Comprehensive Neuroanatomy of the Rat HeartHeart tissue sections were imaged as they were cut using a 4th generation KESM platform (Strateos, San Francisco, CA), preserving tissue section morphology and registration to precisely conform to that of the intact, paraffin embedded organ. The image resolution (0.5 µm per pixel) yields clear visualization of cellular/neuronal scale
