“…While the general principals of the story circle has roots in the critical pedagogical practices of Paulo Freire as well as Indigenous, African American and Latino activists and their Anglo allies (Curthoys, Cuthbertson, & Clark, 2012;Lau & Seedat, 2015, Rodriguez, 2015, this paper draws from the story circle's specific routes as developed and implemented by John O'Neal, a New Orleans based civil rights activist and founding member of the Free Southern Theater (FST) which was founded in the 1960's as a cultural arm of the civil rights movement in the black belt south (Randels, 2005, O'Neal, O'Neal, Hoffman, & Rao, 2006Randels, 2005). According to Randels (2005), the story circle protocol developed out of the Free Southern Theaters desire for a more democratic process of discourse that included all voices.…”
