The Concept of Waste and Waste Management

Abstract: Several studies and researches have been conducted on the sources and characteristics of wastes as well as the possible adverse effect of inappropriate handling and best international practices. One thing that is still not clear however is what exactly constitutes a waste? How much do we know about what should be classed as waste? What are the historical contexts of waste managements? The present paper seeks to examine these vital questions with a view to providing answers from previous studies. The paper empl… Show more

“…When the source of waste is known, then something can be done to prevent or reduce waste at the point of creation. Several research studies have been conducted on the sources and characteristics of waste as well as the possible adverse effect of inappropriate handling and best international practices (Amasuomo and Baird, 2016). There are several sources of waste; however, Eschooltoday (2015) identified the following as sources of waste: municipal, medical/clinical, agricultural, end-of-automobiles, construction and demolition, electronics and industrial.…”

“…Improper handling of the material found as one of the significant construction sources waste generation [10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17]. Improper material handling includes damages during the transportation, unpacked supply and throwaway packaging [28].…”

“…A massive waste of about 40% is produced globally due to construction activities [12]. Another study by [13], reports household waste production as 36.73%, and commercial waste production as 21.54%. Similar evidence is reported by [14] from Hong Kong, which determined that approximately 1-10% of the total acquired material left as a waste on site.…”

“…Therefore, EU waste management policy aims to reduce the impact of waste on the environment and health and to improve the efficient use of resources in the EU. The longterm goal of this policy is to reduce the amount of waste generated, and if its generation is unavoidable, to promote its use as resources, to increase recycling and to ensure safe disposal of waste (Amasuomo & Baird, 2016). Hence the need to change the current economic model based on a linear approach to the circular economy.…”
