The conversion of lignocellulosic biomass to bioethanol: pretreatment technology comparison

Abstract: The barrier to realising the potential of lignocellulosic bioethanol is the recalcitrance of cellulosic biomass. Overcoming this biomass recalcitrance is the key challenge to large scale production of lignocellulosic bioethanol. Pretreatment is an important and critical step that enables enzyme hydrolysis of lignocellulose conversion to ethanol. Finding a pretreatment method for reducing the high recalcitrance via cost-effective pretreatment methods would therefore be of great benefit. This study aims at inves… Show more

“…Total solids (TS) and volatile solids (VS) were determined according to Standard Methods. 38 Lignocellulose contents of the substrate and inoculum were determined using the Chesson method as described by Wardani et al 39 The pH of the sludge was measured with a microprocessor pH metre (pH 212, Hanna Instruments), while the electrical conductivity (EC) was measured with a conductivity metre (ES 215, Hanna Instruments). The carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) elements were established with Flash2000 Organic Elemental Analyser (ThermoFisher Scientific).…”

“…Penelitian ini mendapatkan hasil bahwa kadar etanol sampah daun yang diberikan pretreatment lebih tinggi daripada kadar etanol dari sampah daun yang tidak diberikan pretreatment. Pretreatment merupakan tahap utama keberhasilan pemanfaatan bahan baku lignoselulosa untuk menghasilkan bioetanol karena memfasilitasi hidrolisis oleh enzim [34,35].…”

“…The pretreatment technologies that have been industrialized are shown in Table 3. A pretreatment capable of industrialization should be fulfilled the following conditions: it is simple, feasible, cheap in terms of equipment; it has less environmental pollution, high saccharification efficiency of raw materials, less carbohydrate loss, and less by-products; it has good compatibility with fermentation process [49][50][51][52].…”
