The Correlation between Physical Environmental Factors and the Occurrence of Leptospirosis

Abstract: Leptospirosis is a disease caused by a bacteria called Leptospira. Environmental risk factors for leptospirosis include biological, social, and physical (river or bodies of water, ditches, puddles, and the distance between the settlement area with garbage disposal area). This research aimed to determine the correlation between the physical environmental factors with the evidence of leptospirosis in Sukahaji Village, Babakan Ciparay District of Bandung City in 2017. The design of this research is a survey with c… Show more

“…Both studies state that poor sewer conditions are not a risk factor for leptospirosis (22) and the presence of wastewater in people's homes is not associated with the incidence of leptospirosis (24). Another case with research by Kurniawati, Nuryati (2018) which stated that there is a connection between the existence of sewers near the dwelling and the incidence of Leptospirosis (25). However, two other studies state that when the urine of mice infected with the bacteria Leptospira contaminating sewer water and the flow is inundated or overflows, sewers can play a role as a factor of leptospirosis transmission (26), as well as clogged sewer conditions, piling garbage, and stagnant water have an effect on flooding and can also invite rats (4).…”

“…2 Leptospirosis bacteria in the province. 2,4 Leptospirosis is also known as mud fever, slime fever, swamp fever, autumnal fever, infectious jaundice, field fever, and cane fever. Based on etiology, spirochetes bacteria from the genus Leptospira, family Treponema, cause leptospirosis.…”

“…Leptospirosis is a neglected zoonotic disease that is closely related to fairly complex environmental factors (Lau et al 2012;Kurniawati and Nuryati 2018;Thibeaux et al 2018). The causal agent of leptospirosis being Leptospira bacterium which when contaminates water or soil with urine from infected animals such as rats, makes it a point source for array of clinical conditions in humans such as self-limiting febrile illness to Weil's disease, manifested by jaundice, acute renal failure and bleeding (Croda et al, 2010).…”
