The crystal structure of zirconyl chloride octahydrate and zirconyl bromide octahydrate

Abstract: The compounds ZrOC12. 8I-I20 and ZrOBr~. 8tt20 are isomorphous and belong to the tetragonal space group D~x-P421c, with Z --8. For the chloride a ----17-08 and c -~ 7.689 /~, and for the bromide a ----17-65 and c -~ 7.95 /~. The zireonyl group consists of a complex in which four zirconium atoms are at the corners of a slightly distorted square and are linked along each edge of the square by two OH groups--one above and one below the plane of the square. Four water molecules are bound to each zirconium in such … Show more

“…The four zirconium ions can be hydrolyzed independently and such a tetrameric cation can be represented schematically as shown in Figure 7. The overall dimensions of this complex, estimated from the structural data reported by Clearfield and Vaughan (1956), are -10 ~ for the overall square configuation and 4.5 fl~ for the thickness, and include the van der Waals radii of the oxygen atoms. A complex with these dimensions can be fitted into the interlayer space of the expanded montmorillonite with either a double layer of flat-lying complexes, or a single layer of complexes standing normal to the layer.…”

“…Sodium ions are kept in a zirconia nano particle structure, thus stabilizing the tetragonal phase [24]. Use of NaOH as a hydrothermal solution provides pH value, which is enough to activate dilution of t-ZrO 2 nano particles, stabilized by impurity ions.…”

“…In solutions of zirconyl chloride, the planar Zr-tetramer [Zr4(OH)8(H20)j 8+ is the dominant species, which can polymerize to larger units (Clearfield and Vaughan, 1956;Bartley, 1988). Based on the d(001)-values of Zr-hydroxy-intercalated montmorillonite of 19 ,~, Yamanaka and Brindley (1979) postulated that Zr-tetramers measuring 10 • 10 • 4.5 ,~ are intercalated with the plane of the molecule either perpendicular to the clay layers or as a double layer of flat lying complexes.…”
