The determinants of research collaboration modes: exploring the effects of research and researcher characteristics on co-authorship

Abstract: Given the high priority accorded to research collaboration on the assumption that it yields higher productivity and impact rates than do non-collaborative results, research collaboration modes are assessed for their benefits and costs before being executed. Researchers are accountable for selecting their collaboration modes, a decision made through strategic decision making influenced by their environments and the tradeoffs among alternatives. In this context, by using bibliographic information and related int… Show more

“…In recent decades, scientific collaboration has also increased due to the complexity and high cost of scientific research concerning 'big science' (Hand, 2010;Katz and Martin, 1997;De Solla Price, 1986) as well as to the growing importance of new multidisciplinary fields (Jeong et al, 2011;Van Leeuwen and Tijssen, 1993). In addition, the rapid growth of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), the improvement of transportation technology together with the reduction of cost have also greatly facilitated scientific communication and "the rise of research network" (Adams, 2012;cf.…”

“…Stable partnerships are often established as a result of meeting foreign colleagues in workshops, conferences and symposia. Cultural affinity, access to resources for cooperative study and comparable levels of academic excellence and technological development all promote collaboration (Jeong, Choi, and Kim, 2011). While the Internet has enhanced long-distance communication among scientists, evidence shows that most collaboration begins with personal contact (Jeong, Choi, and Kim, 2011).…”

“…The benefit of increased academic productivity is recognized in the literature as one of the most compelling benefits of collaboration among scholars (Lee & Bozeman, 2005;McFadyen & Cannella, 2004;Wuchty et al, 2007;Jeong et al, 2011;Ou et al, 2012). Empirical evidence suggests that co-authored papers are more often published in journals with higher impact factors when compared with those of single authors (Katz & Martin, 1997;Bozeman & Corley, 2004;Lee & Bozeman, 2005;Jeong et al, 2011.…”

“…Benefits such as intellectual companionship and personal pleasure through interaction with likeminded scholars (Katz & Martin, 1997;Melin, 2000;Thorsteinsdottir, 2000;Beaver, 2001;Bozeman & Corley, 2004;Ou et al, 2012); the effective division of labor reflecting the unique talents of team members that have an array of knowledge, skills, and abilities (Senker, 1993;Katz & Martin, 1997, Melin, 2000Beaver, 2001;Bozeman & Corley, 2004;Ou et al, 2012); and the transfer of knowledge or skills to other teams members through the experience gained during the collaborative project (Katz & Martin, 1997;Melin, 2000;Beaver, 2001;Jeong et al,2011) to name a few.…”
