“…It has been suggested that the archistriatum of the telencephalon in birds is at least partly comparable to the mammalian amygdala (Edinger et al, 1903;Edinger, 1908;Ariëns-Kappers, 1922;Ariëns-Kappers et al, 1936;Zeier and Karten, 1971;Bruce and Neary, 1995;Puelles et al, 2000), a structure that itself possesses both pallial and subpallial parts (Swanson and Petrovich, 1998;Puelles et al, 2000). Based on neurochemical and developmental data, it seemed overwhelmingly clear to the Forum that all parts of the archistriatum (i.e., the regions with the word archistriatum in their name) as defined in Karten and Hodos (1967) and in Kuenzel and Masson (1988) are pallial Wada et al, 2001, Reiner et al, 2002Sun et al, 2003). The Forum further concluded that the taenia (also called the nucleus taeniae) has typically been regarded as a part of the archistriatal complex, although this was not reflected in its name (Ariëns-Kappers et al, 1936;Zeier and Karten, 1971;Thompson et al, 1998;Chen et al, 1999;Absil et al, 2002) and that much or all of the taenia is subpallial (Foidart et al, 1999;Cobos et al, 2001b;Absil et al, 2002).…”

“…In the chick, GABAergic neurons generate in the subpallium and migrate tangentially into the pallium (Cobos et al, 2001;Tuorto et al, 2003). In the adult chicken, glutamic acid decarboxylase 65 mRNA, which synthesizes GABA, is expressed in the subpallium, including the striatum, globus pallidus, interpeduncular nucleus, nucleus accumbens, lateral part of the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis, subpallial amygdaloid area, and septum (Sun et al, 2005). In contrast, the present study clearly showed that VGLUT2 mRNA is expressed extensively in the pallial structures of the pigeon, i.e., the hyperpallium, mesopallium, nidopallium, hippocampal formation, dorsolateral corticoid area, temporo-parieto-occipital area, piriform cortex, arcopallium, posterior pallial amygdala, and nucleus taeniae of the amygdala.…”

“…birds, the origin and distribution of GABAergic neurons in the subpallium have been shown in chickens (Cobos et al, 2001;Sun et al, 2005). Migrated GABAergic neurons are widely distributed in the pallium of adult pigeons (Domenici et al, 1988;Veenman and Reiner, 1994).…”
