The effect of a mobile-application tool on biology students' motivation and achievement in species identification: A Self-Determination Theory perspective

Abstract: I love what I do! Writing this PhD dissertation has been an intrinsically motivating journey. However, this journey could not have gone so well without the support of many. First of all, I would like to thank my supervisors. My main supervisor Arild Raaheim has given me informational feedback, space to pursue many research ideas, grant proposals, and research collaborations. He always looks out for me and my wellbeing, and his educational philosophy has inspired me as a learner and also how I would aspire to b… Show more

“…Importantly, mobile‐learning (m‐learning), which is defined as “learning across multiple contexts, through social and content interactions, using personal electronic devices” (eg, smartphone, PDA, tablet; Crompton, , p. 4), affords learning opportunities beyond the traditional methods used in classrooms, such as the ability to extend the learning space from a formal context (classroom) to an informal context (social network, augmented reality, location awareness). Furthermore, m‐learning may have additional benefits such as increasing students’ mastery with learning tasks, providing prompt feedback, facilitating faster learning by offering efficient ways to access information, affording opportunities to interact with the course content (Hashemi, Azizinezhad, Najafi, & Nesari, ) and enhancing intrinsic motivation (ie, engaging in activities because of the inherent interest and enjoyment of the activity; Jeno, Grytnes, & Vandvik, ).…”

“…The goals of the current study were threefold. First, we aimed to replicate Jeno et al .’s () findings on mobile application in a SDT perspective. Thus, our first hypothesis was that the mobile application (versus textbook) would produce higher levels of perceived competence, intrinsic motivation and achievement.…”

“…An explanation might be that when students perceive the app as enhancing their capability (i.e., their proficiency and skillfulness) in learning, they may be more apt to continue using it in the future. Perceived competence represents the extent to which an individual believes that he or she has performed or is able to perform well at an activity (Baek & Touati, 2017;Froiland & Oros, 2014;Jeno, Grytnes, & Vandvik, 2017). This implies that individuals have an innate need to evaluate their own mastery and effectiveness and attain desired outcomes, when dealing with his or her environment.…”

“…The use of technology in the education filed especially EXE software that has good criteria can bring new effect for the students [59] and have positive impact in improving the students' learning motivation [60] [65]. The students' high motivation will affect the students' achievement [66].…”
