“…The free-access test between sugar and casein may be regarded as analogous to Harriman's (1955) free-access test, or to Posttest 2 of Experiment 2, and showed comparable results. The partitioned test between the casein side and the sugar side may be regarded as analogous to Cullen and Scarborough's (1969) bar-press test, or to Posttest 1 of the present study, and also showed comparable results.…”

“…In addition, Cullen attributed the failure of two of his three groups of adrenalectomized rats to gain weight postoperatively to his LiCl poisoning procedure, when, in fact, weight loss after adrenalectomy is a commonly reported finding (cf. Cullen & Scarborough, 1969;Fregly, 1958, Figure 1C;Richter, 1936, Table 1). The AX and AC subjects in the present study weighed less at the end of the extinction phase than SX animals, and yet they showed no deficits in NaCl consumption.…”

“…In one study, rats which had become polydipsic with access to a highly palatable saccharin-glucose mixture showed a reduced NaCl appetite coupled with weight loss if presented with a postadrenalectomy choice between the preferred solution and 2.9% NaCl (Cullen, 1970a). Cullen (1969) has also demonstrated that rats which had received sublethal doses of gamma-ray irradiation while drinking NaCl showed attenuated NaCl consumption for a week after adrenalectomy.…”
