The effect of Andromed® and coconut water + 20% egg yolk as diluent on semen motility of Belgian Blue cattle

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to observed the potential use of coconut water + 20% egg yolk (CW) as an alternative diluent to replace Andromed®, on semen motility of Belgian Blue (BB) cattle. The sample were fresh semen collected from 3 years old BB using artificial vagina. The fresh semen was diluted into Andromed® diluent (P1) and coconut water + 20% egg yolk (P2). The semen motility (%) was observed at 0, 2, 4, 6, 12, 24 and 48 hours after dilution and then compared between group using t-test. The result sh… Show more

“…It is user-friendly, and the composition includes sugar, tris hydroxy-aminomethane, and glycerol as an energy source, a buffer, and cryoprotectant, respectively, alongside antibiotics to prevent bacterial growth (Juniandri and Isnaini, 2014). AndroMed also contains soybean extract rich in lecithin, minerals including sodium, magnesium, calcium, chloride, phosphorus, potassium, and manganese, as well as carbohydrates, proteins, citric acid, glycerol lecithin, fats, and glyceryl phosphoryl choline (Lestari et al, 2014;Aji et al, 2019).…”

“…The importance of extender in poultry is to increase volume and facilitate prolonged handling, maintaining good sperm motility and viability through inhibition of pathways detrimental to semen. During semen handling and storage, there is often the problem of the formation of lipid peroxides causing impaired spermatozoa plasma membrane, which culminate into decrease in semen motility [ 2 ]. Seminal plasma possesses an antioxidant system to mitigate the consequences of reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation; this seems to protect sperm cells.…”
