The effect of antipsychotic treatment on Theory of Mind

Abstract: Although TOM and psychotic symptoms are related to each other, antipsychotic treatment impacts each independently, suggesting a dissimilar cognitive or neurobiological substrate for the two.

“…A growing body of literature has shown, consistently, that schizophrenia patients compared to healthy people present social cognitive and neurocognitive impairments which are relatively stable and persistent, suggesting that this is a trait-dependent rather than state-dependant aspect of the disorder [9][10][11]. Social cognitive deficits have been widely described as modifying patients' behavior when interacting with other people (theory of mind (ToM) deficits) [11][12][13][14] and in recognizing emotions [15][16][17] and other social information cues [9,18]. Therefore, social cognitive deficits are believed to be important predictors of functional outcome in schizophrenia [19,20].…”

“…The clozapine and the olanzapine groups performed similarly as the controls. Mizrahi et al (2007) evaluated the ToM of 17 drug-free psychotic patients (schizophrenia, schizophreniform and schizoaffective disorder) at baseline and every 2 weeks for 6 weeks, after initiating antipsychotic treatment (different second generation drugs) and observed an improvement in ToM performance. However, the authors could not exclude the influence of a practice effect due to the repetition of the ToM task and call attention to the lack of a placebo-control group.…”
