Abstract: Caffeine causes a significant decrease in choroidal thickness following oral intake. This decrease might be a result of reduced ocular blood flow due to its vasoconstrictive effect.

“…Major systemic effects of caffeine include increased blood pressure, decreased heart rate, and reduced cerebral blood flow 13 . Caffeine additionally decreases retinal blood flow by increasing the resistivity factor of retinal vessels, and it has been shown that shortly after oral intake, caffeine causes a significant reduction in choroidal thickness 4, 14…”

“…Although very limited data are known about the pharmacokinetics of caffeine in ocular tissues, 2 several studies investigated the clinical effects of caffeine in the eye. Coffee was attributed to decreased ocular blood flow via constricting retinal arterioles and venules, 3 decreased choroidal thickness, 4 -although controversial-increased intraocular pressure (IOP), 5 and enlarged the pupils 6 …”

“…Three consecutive scans were performed, at the same time of day on three separate days, to control for diurnal variations in choroidal structure. 25 , 26 Moreover, participants were advised to avert caffeine 27 , 28 and nicotine 29 at least 1 hour prior to the measurement to avoid short-term changes of ChT. In order to wash out near work-induced accommodative choroidal thinning 30 , 31 and to stabilize blood pressure, 26 participants completed a 10-minute resting phase with distance viewing.…”
