The effect of carbon dioxide therapy on composite graft survival

Abstract: PURPOSE:To investigate the effect of carboxytherapy in auricular composite grafts in rabbits. METHODS:An experimental study was conducted using 20 rabbits randomly assigned to a treatment group of carboxytherapy or a control group of saline solution. In each ear, a circular graft with 1.5 cm or 2 cm of diameter was amputated and reattached. Animals underwent carbon dioxide or saline injection four times during the experiment. We analyzed clinical evolution of the animals, grafts survival, histopathology featur… Show more

“…This means that the more CO 2 is present in the tissues, the higher is oxygen pressure in relation to the percentage of oxygen saturation of hemoglobin. Therefore, there is a shift in the oxygen dissociation curve and increased oxygen release from hemoglobin (the affinity of hemoglobin toward oxygen is reduced, which results in the release of oxygen to tissues) (Varlaro, 2007;King & King, 2013;Brandi et al, 2001;Pinheiro, Crema, Millan, Carvalho, & Mendonca, 2015;Nisi et al, 2014;Durães, Durães, Carneiro, Lino, & Sousa, 2013;Muzi et al, 2015). Moreover, the interaction between released CO 2 and factors regulating flow through tissues results in the vasodilatation of microvessels.…”

“…Carboxytherapy improves tissue oxygenation by increased release of oxygen based on Bohr effect which states that the affinity of hemoglobin to oxygen is decreased in lower pH and higher tension of CO2 . There are multiple clinical trials that prove the benefits of carboxytherapy in treatment of peripheral arteriopathy, chronic leg ulcers, cellulite, localized lipolysis, periorbital rejuvenation, graft survival, and wound healing . In this pilot study, we investigated the safety and efficacy of carboxytherapy for treatment of localized plaque psoriasis with clinical and histopathologic evaluation.…”
