The Effect of corrosion on the quality repair of the aluminum alloy A 5083 H11 by bonded composites

Abstract: In this paper, the simultaneous effect of corrosion and cracking on the performance of the bonded composite patch repair in aluminum alloy A5083 marine structure was investigated using three-dimensional finite element methods. To this end, two patches made of carbon/epoxy and boron/epoxy, bonded on corroded plates with and without crack, were tested under different applied loads. The effect of both corroded and cracked materials on the damage of the adhesive FM73 was also highlighted. The obtained results show… Show more

“…Aluminum alloy plate has the advantages of having a light weight, high strength, good ductility, low low-temperature brittle fracture sensitivity, corrosion resistance, and being easy to form [1,2]. These characteristics mean that it is widely used in the field of engineering structures, and can not only be used as a decoration material in concrete surfaces, doors, windows and curtain walls [3] but also as a new material to support some models for construction projects [4], reinforcement materials for concrete structures [5,6], and structural materials for offshore platforms [7].…”

“…Several researchers have highlighted the effectiveness of this technique, Harth-Smith was among the pioneers in this field in the early 1970s [2], he derived an explicit analytical solution for the static load carrying capacity of the single-lap adhesive bonded joint configuration, in addition, he has quantified the influence of adhesive plasticity in shear. We may also mention researchers like Sadek et al [3], they have investigated the effect of corrosion on the quality of repairs. Albedah et al [4] have worked on the analysis of the single and double sided bonded configuration with circular patch shape using finite element method, according to them, the use of the double-sided bonded configuration leads to a significant reduction in stress concentration at the crack tip, and the substrate is more relieved and recovers the maximum its mechanical properties.…”
