The effect of fire‐retardant additives and a surface insulative fabric on fire performance and mechanical property retention of polyester composites

Abstract: SUMMARYThis study investigates the simultaneous use of conventional fire-retardant additives and an insulative intumescent thermal barrier/mat to improve the fire performance and mechanical property retention of glass-fibre-reinforced polyester (GRP) composites. Significant reductions in the peak heat release rate (PHRR) and total heat release (THR) were observed from measured cone calorimetric data following the addition of nitrogen, phosphorous, halogen containing and hydroxylated fire-retardant additives. S… Show more

“…The coatings can be of polymeric nature where flame retardant additives, usually intumescent systems, are dispersed in a resin binder [8][9][10] or ceramic and glass fibrous mats, sometimes containing exfoliated graphite [11,12]. These conventional coatings however, have certain disadvantages for instance, the intumescent coating requires a thick coating layer (> 1mm coating thickness) [13], which may not be applicable in some applications.…”

“…They also have been used as part of composite construction, where the intumescent is applied on the surface of the part as a copolymerized layer rather than as a paint (56,57). Sometimes, inorganic materials are added to the intumescent flame-retardant package to strengthen the oxidative stability of the carbon foam/char.…”

“…A resina poliéster vem sendo largamente empregada em compósitos reforçados com fibra de vidro aplicados em aeronaves, barcos e pontes devido a sua excelente processabilidade, boa resistência química, elevado módulo de flexão e baixo custo [25]. Contudo, apesar das vantagens, a resina possui alta inflamabilidade [26]. Deste modo, retardantes de chama como trióxido de antimônio e compostos orgânicos clorados são utilizados como aditivos em P-FV [27].…”
