“…This paper reviews the developments in the synthesis of flat-plate SSA materials produced by sol-gel methods. To provide a more focused discussion, paint selective coatings have been excluded from this review as they generally have an inferior spectral selectivity [33,48,49] due to the strong absorption by the organic polymer paint binder in the IR range that increases emittance [33,49,50]. Hopefully, this review can provide a platform for material scientists/engineers to intensify their research on the development of cost-effective and environmentally friendly coatings for solar thermal energy applications.…”

“…In the FTIR spectrum of POSS the strong absorption band at 1108 cm -1 is observed (Fig. 1, curve 1) which could be attributed to the asymmetric stretching mode of ν as (Si-O-Si) in caged structure [21][22][23] and it is always accompanied with the corresponding symmetric stretching counterpart mode ν s (Si-O-Si) in the spectral region from 400 to 480 cm −1 (at 481 cm [25,26]. The band at 742 cm -1 is attributed to the stretching vibration in the Si-C(H 2 ) isobutyl groups of POSS [25,27] [23,25,29].…”

“…The calculated values of the solid surface energy (Table 1) dropped significantly when the clean DSS 2205 substrate was covered with the pure epoxy coating and even more when covered with the 130-nm silica/epoxy coating, confirming the induced surface hydrophobicity. The low surface energy of the 130-nm silica/epoxy coating is most probably a consequence of the addition of lowsurface-energy additives, i.e., compounds with CH 3 group [33], which the silanated silica particles implant into the epoxy matrix. Fig.…”
